Tempest V vs Fw 190 D-9 : 1944-45 (Osprey)

Considerati da molti due tra i migliori caccia a pistoni mai costruiti, il Tempest V e l'Fw 190D-9 alzarono l'asticella in termini di progettazione aeronautica e capacità operative durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Il "Dora 9", dal muso allungato e progettato da Kurt Tank, fece la sua prima apparizione nei cieli dei fronti occidentale e orientale alla fine dell'estate del 1944. Veloce e con un'eccezionale velocità di salita, superò rapidamente quasi tutti i caccia schierati dalla RAF, dall'USAAF e dall'Aeronautica Sovietica.

L'Hawker Tempest V entrò in servizio all'inizio del 1944, dimostrandosi inizialmente un aereo affidabile quando venne impiegato per intercettare le bombe volanti V1 sull'Inghilterra meridionale. Dall'autunno del 1944, il Tempest V equipaggiò anche gli squadroni della 2ª Forza Aerea Tattica, operando a supporto delle armate alleate che avanzavano nell'Europa nord-occidentale.
Divenne un potente aereo d'attacco al suolo, armato con razzi subalari, ma anche un intercettore di prim'ordine quando si trovò a competere con gli avanzati Fw 190D-9 e Me 262 della Luftwaffe.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190 'Long Nose' : An Illustrated History of the FW 190 D Series

Questo libro ripercorre l'intera storia dello sviluppo delle varianti del Focke-Wulf Fw 190 equipaggiate con motori in linea. Il primo Fw 190 con motore Daimler Benz raffreddato a liquido effettuò il suo primo volo all'inizio del 1942, seguito sei mesi dopo da un altro esemplare con motore Jumo 213.

La produzione dei modelli Fw 190 C, Fw 190 D e Ta 153 fu ritardata dal Ministero dell'Aeronautica tedesco. Solo nel 1944, quando la Germania aveva ormai perso il controllo dei cieli, entrò in produzione l'Fw 190 D-9, un caccia provvisorio equipaggiato con il motore Jumo 213 A. L'Fw 190 D-9 si rivelò un successo immediato, in gran parte grazie a un eccellente programma di test sui prototipi condotto dall'ingegnere Hans Sander. Il velivolo entrò rapidamente in servizio con la Luftwaffe e oltre 1.700 esemplari furono completati entro la fine della guerra.

Il Fw 190 D-9 diede origine a numerose varianti migliorate con il più potente motore Jumo 213 F e un armamento più pesante, tuttavia solo pochi esemplari delle versioni D-11 e D-13 furono completati.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190A - An Illustrated History of the Luftwaffe's Legendary Fighter Aircraft

Together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 formed the standard equipment of the German fighter arm in the Second World War. Initial flight trials in 1939 revealed a number of shortcomings, nevertheless the basic concept of the Fw 190 proved extremely successful.
In contrast to the Bf 109, which was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-vee engine, in developing the Fw 190 Prof. Kurt Tank selected the BMW 801, an air-cooled radial engine that was less sensitive to battle damage. The broad-track undercarriage also gave the Focke-Wulf fighter much superior takeoff and landing characteristics.
The Fw 190 entered quantity production by Focke-Wulf and license manufacturers Fieseler, AGO and Arado in 1941. It proved an immediate success in combat operations in 1942, proving itself superior to the Spitfire in some respects.

This book deals with the development history and testing of this fighter aircraft and production of the early variants of the Fw 190 A. An interesting comparison between the Bf 109 and the Fw 190 shows the strengths and weaknesses of the two aircraft, and authentic reports by former test pilots of Focke-Wulf and the Rechlin Test Station document the aircraft's performance. Also covered are the later torpedo-carrier and reconnaissance versions of the Fw 190.
Lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings, many of which have not been published before, this book provides both aircraft enthusiasts and modelers with a wealth of information, and fills a gap in the history of aircraft design in Germany.
