Piper Cherokee - A Family History
After the Cessna 172, the Piper Cherokee is among the most popular aircraft for private pilots. In continuous production since 1960, the Cherokee family includes models with different engines for varying range and fuel efficiency. Four- and six-seat versions exist, with some featuring retractable landing gear and turbocharged engines.
This book covers the history and development of all Piper Cherokee models, including safety and ownership aspects, internal and external details, and special variants. These include STOL modifications, seaplane conversions, tailwheel versions, and new engine options.
The Piper PA-28, a direct competitor to the Cessna 172, was initially produced with a rectangular wing and fixed gear, with engines from 140 to 235 hp. Retractable gear created the Arrow series. Larger, high-performance PA-32 models include the Cherokee Six, Saratoga, and Six X, with retractable gear versions known as the Lance and Saratoga II series.
Over 32.000 Cherokees have been built for civilian and military use, making it one of the most successful light aircraft families in history.
