S.E. 210 Caravelle - A Legends of Flight Illustrated History (Legends of Flight)

The Sud Aviation S.E. 210 Caravelle, a French-built jet airliner from the 1950s, was named after the 15th-century caravela ships used in the Age of Exploration. Along with the British de Havilland Comet, it was one of the first jet-powered passenger airliners. SO 4050 Vautour (Les matériels de l'armée de l'air et l'Aéronavale 11)

Designed by SNCASO in response to a requirement set by the French Air Force staff in 1951, the Vautour is a twin-jet aircraft with swept wings and tail. From the outset, three versions were planned: single-seat ground attack (A), two-seat bomber (B), and two-seat all-weather fighter (N).

The first flight took place in October 1952, with initial deliveries in May 1956. The original order for 300 aircraft was reduced to 140 by late 1958 for budget reasons. About thirty aircraft were sold to Israel and used during the Six-Day War, with some remaining in service until 1972.

In France, Vautours were used in Polynesia during nuclear tests to collect radioactive particles.
