Since the early days of aviation, crossing the Strait of Dover fascinated pioneers. A competition organized by the English newspaper Daily Mail sparked great interest among aviators. The story focused on a duel between Hubert Latham and Louis Blériot, culminating on 25 July 1909 with Blériot's victory.

The Opal Coast, with its wide sandy beaches, was the stage for many feats. Berck, Le Touquet, Boulogne, Hardelot, Wimereux, Rue, and Le Crotoy witnessed, at the start of the 20th century, these "flying madmen" in their unusual machines.

Many trials, accidents, hours of training, ingenious improvisations, and technical achievements were needed to accomplish such a feat.

Louis Blériot - Biographie d'un créateur d'exception

Louis Blériot (1872-1936), a key figure in early French aviation, was an extraordinary inventor and entrepreneur. A graduate engineer from École centrale de Paris, he first worked with acetylene lamps, then became a pioneer of airplanes, designing and flying his own machines for three years, before becoming an aviation industrialist.

Blériot-Aéronautique (1909-1937) was the world's first aircraft company, producing one plane per day in 1910. By the start of World War I, it was the global leader. After the war, production volume and quality kept it at the top. Blériot owned seven factories and employed 7.500 people.
