Avro Military 1910-63

Founded in 1910 by Alliott Verdon Roe, A.V. Roe and Company Limited built its first military aircraft two years later. By 1914, the company was literally flying when it designed the first of many iconic aircraft in the shape of the Avro 504, which sold in colossal numbers and was the key factor in keeping the company in the aviation industry after the end of the First World War, while many others fell by the wayside.
In 1936, Avro became part of the new Hawker Siddeley group and within two years was operating a new factory at Chadderton, where, together with Newton Heath, all focus was on building the Anson, Blenheim and later the Manchester. Following production of just 200 Manchesters, attention turned to one of the greatest bombers of the Second World War, the Lancaster, of which over 7,300 were built.
This caused further expansion at Avro's main Woodford base, part use of Ringway and a 'shadow' factory at Yeadon under Avro control throughout the war years.

Although an obvious contraction of orders took place during the post-war years, Avro was, thanks to its earlier successes, a big player in the British aviation industry and would continue to produce an iconic range of military aircraft.
The last hurrah was the delightful 748 which just scrapes into this publication as the final example of an aircraft solely designed by Avro, while some still remain in service today. Of the company's big three, examples of the 504, Lancaster and Vulcan also remain airworthy as testimony to what they achieved, the men who flew them and the great aircraft manufacturer that designed and built them. Many more are extent in museums across the world.

This company profile is one of several that will have to be divided into two parts, one military and one civilian, although there will be some crossover, as many types served in both capacities. Avro deserves two entries in the series, and this book gives a good grounding to the huge and diverse range of aircraft that this once proud manufacturer produced.

Avro 748

The vision of Alliott Verdon Roe and his team in designing and building the 748 resulted in a highly successful commercial airliner, that since the 1960s has been responsible for opening new air routes in many corners of the world.
Many of the airstrips into which the 748 formerly operated are now fully fledged international airports, with paved runways, sophisticated air traffic control and navigation equipment, and shops, but it was not always this way. In the early days, the 748 proved its worth worldwide by operating on dirt airstrips and at high elevations and temperatures.

Avro Shackleton (Flight Craft)

Inizialmente concepito come versione da ricognizione marittima del bombardiere Lincoln, a sua volta derivato dal famoso Lancaster del periodo bellico, impiegato nel dopoguerra in un ruolo di ricognizione generale/marittima (vedi Velivolo n. 4), l'Avro Shackleton (che prendeva il nome dall'esploratore polare Sir Ernest Shackleton) era un progetto completamente nuovo, alimentato da quattro motori Rolls Royce Griffon 57 che azionavano eliche controrotanti a sei pale.

Suddivisa in tre sezioni principali, quest'ultima pubblicazione di Flight Craft, uscita in concomitanza con la presentazione dei primi esemplari dell'attesissimo kit Airfix in scala 1/72, offre una sintetica storia dello sviluppo e della carriera operativa dello Shackleton, dal prototipo e dal suo ingresso in servizio nella RAF nel 1951, fino al suo impiego presso l'Aeronautica sudafricana, l'unico altro operatore di questo tipo di velivolo.

La Sezione 1 descrive la sua progettazione, i continui miglioramenti e lo sviluppo attraverso le tre principali versioni, sia nel ruolo di ricognizione marittima che in quello di allerta precoce aviotrasportata, fino al suo ritiro dal servizio dopo quattro decenni di attività nella RAF nel 1991. La sezione include numerose fotografie dell'epoca con didascalie dettagliate, molte delle quali inedite.

Segue una sezione di 16 pagine con illustrazioni a colori che mostrano i profili e le viste da due lati delle livree e delle marcature utilizzate da questo tipo di velivolo in servizio presso la RAF e la SAAF.
