Storied Independent Automakers - Nash, Hudson, and American Motors

This book presents the long history of Nash Motor Company and Hudson Motor Car Company, two firms that remained independent until their merger in 1954 to form American Motors Company, later acquired by Chrysler in 1987. It explains their role in the American car industry and highlights their often overlooked contributions to engineering and design.

The author examines how these smaller companies competed in the postwar period against Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, whose size offered major advantages in production, styling, marketing and sales. The book describes the technical and stylistic innovations that helped the independents keep their products distinctive and, at times, successful despite strong competition.

It also presents the work of key leaders, including Charles Nash, Roy D. Chapin, Howard Coffin, George Mason, George Romney and Roy D. Chapin Jr., whose influence has received little attention in previous studies. The final chapters discuss the reasons for the decline of American Motors Company and the legacy it left for later manufacturers and buyers. The work is based on extensive archival research.

Hudson Automobiles - An Illustrated History

This book presents a clear history of the Hudson Motorcar Company, one of the most successful independent American car makers of the early twentieth century.

While many small manufacturers disappeared, Hudson gained a strong reputation with the Super Six, one of the most admired cars of its time. The company survived the Great Depression and became an important supplier during the Second World War, producing anti-aircraft guns, torpedo tubes, gun mounts and aircraft fuselages, including that of the Enola Gay.

After the war, Hudson launched the innovative Step-Down models and developed the refined Twin-H Power engine. The company also returned to racing, achieving unmatched success in NASCAR between 1951 and 1954 with the famous Hudson Hornet. No other brand has dominated the series to the same degree.

The book also explains Hudson's later integration into American Motors and its lasting place in American automotive history.

Hudson Automobiles 1934-1957 Photo Archive

This book presents a clear overview of Hudson's strong focus on performance. The company regularly entered speed and endurance events to support its claims, and it achieved good results throughout its history.

Hudson's greatest success came in the early 1950s, when the Hornet combined a powerful engine, low center of gravity, and well-designed suspension and steering. These qualities made it the dominant car in stock-car racing from 1951 to 1954.

Despite its achievements on the track, Hudson could not secure the sales needed to remain independent. In 1954 the company was taken over by Nash, creating American Motors. Even so, Hudson is remembered for its technical innovations and its lasting influence on American car design.

The book includes 135 high-quality black-and-white photographs of Hudson models built between 1934 and 1957.
