ERA : The autobiography of R4D (Great Cars)
ERA (English Racing Automobiles) cars symbolized British motor racing in the 1930s and remain cherished by enthusiasts. This book tells the story of R4D, a historic racing car that has competed for nearly 80 years with great success. Originally driven by Raymond Mays, a key figure at ERA, R4D passed through multiple owners who kept it at the forefront of competition.
The book details R4D's remarkable history, from its early years as R4B and R4C (1935-1937), competing across Europe and South Africa, to its transformation into R4D. Driven by Mays, it set records in hillclimbs and races, including the British Grand Prix. After Mays, it continued winning with Ron Flockhart (1952-53) and Ken Wharton (1954-56), remaining competitive despite its age.
From the late 1950s to the 1970s, dedicated owners ensured R4D stayed in competition. In Anthony Mayman's care (1984-93), it dominated historic racing. After further ownership changes, the author acquired R4D in 2001 and continued its racing legacy, becoming its longest-serving owner since Mays.
With detailed illustrations, this book is essential for those interested in motorsport history.
