In 1972, the Capri received updates, including an overhead-camshaft Pinto engine for the 1600 and 2000 models, a redesigned front end, and a revised dashboard. Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk 2 & Mk 3 - The originality guide to all Capri models 1974 to 1987

The Ford Capri, inspired by the success of the Mustang in the U.S., was introduced in 1969 as "The Car You Always Promised Yourself." Its long hood, sleek 2+2 coupé design, and low stance made it an instant success.

In 1974, the Capri II was launched with a smoother body, engines from 1300 to 3000 cc, and a luxury Ghia version of the 3.0-liter model. The Capri Mk 3 followed in 1978, featuring further refinements and a distinctive four-headlamp front.

Today, these classic Fords have a dedicated following, with active owners' clubs and a strong market for well-preserved examples. Rising values make restoration an increasingly attractive option. With numerous Capri Mk 2 and Mk 3 variants produced, correct identification is essential.

The Ford Capri Story

The Ford Capri, introduced in 1969, redefined GT cars by combining stylish design and strong performance with affordability and practicality. Unlike traditional GT models, which were expensive and difficult to maintain, the Capri was designed to be as easy to own as a Ford Escort while delivering the excitement of a sports car. Ford's launch slogan, "The car you always promised yourself, " captured public interest immediately.

The Capri was an instant success and remained a British favorite until production ended in 1986. By then, the rise of the hot hatchback had overshadowed it. Over three generations, the Capri came in many versions, but all shared a focus on accessible driving fun and everyday usability. While no direct replacement ever emerged, the Capri continues to be cherished by enthusiasts.

Works Cortina, Capri & Corsair in Detail

Rally historian Graham Robson details Ford's rise as a leader in international saloon car competitions during the 1960s, starting with the 1962 Mark 1 Cortina.

The driving force behind this success was Walter Hayes, who enlisted Colin Chapman to create the Lotus-Cortina, and encouraged Ford's entry into events like the Safari Rally and the London-Sydney Marathon. He also brought in Team Lotus and Alan Mann Racing to dominate touring car racing.

This strategy was supported by the development of a new motorsport centre at Boreham, Essex, attracting top drivers such as Jim Clark, Roger Clark, Graham Hill, and Pat Moss. Hayes' promotional efforts were key to Ford's success in both national and international competitions.
