Revealed at the 1959 Amsterdam Motor Show with a 600 cm³ twin, the DAF was produced until 1975 with the Renault-powered 66. Its main original feature was its Variomatic continuous automatic transmission. Made up of pulleys connected by toothed belts, it provided an infinite number of gear ratios, earning it the nickname "the 1 000-speed gearbox". This system made DAFs extremely flexible and easy to drive. However, their reputation was also that of a model intended for women and those who were put off by driving.
However, DAFs were not without real road qualities, as they proved by winning their engine class in the biggest international rallies. Coupled with more powerful engines, on single-seaters and then racing prototypes, the Variomatic demonstrated that it could be associated with engines with a power output exceeding 200 horsepower. In 1975, Volvo bought the small Dutch brand and continued to use the Variomatic until 1982 with the 340 range.
