Lysander

Il Westland Lysander è uno degli aerei più riconoscibili della Gran Bretagna. Westland Whirlwind Mk. I

The Westland Whirlwind belongs to that category of aircraft which entered production but failed to live up to their designers' expectations. Its unreliable engines can be seen as a major reason for this but it only serves to hide other serious problems.
Indeed, even with better engines the results would probably have been the same, as the concept of a twin-engined fighter aircraft capable of meeting single-engined fighters escorting bombers formations on an equal footing was fallacious, as combat in WW2 was soon to prove.

Lysander - L'avion qui venait de Londres

Il Lysander fu utilizzato e divenne famoso per il trasporto clandestino di agenti segreti tra Francia e Inghilterra. Ma chi ricorda il suo impiego come aereo da ricognizione, o anche per il supporto tattico in Europa e in Asia?

Il "Lysander", il primo prodotto conosciuto della "Westland" azienda. Uomini, donne e bambini della Gran Bretagna in tempo di guerra sarebbero presto rimasti stupiti dalla sua forma inconfondibile. Ancora oggi, anche l'appassionato meno esperto può, indicandolo, riconoscere un Lysander e identificare un "Lyzzie" (un nome affettuosamente dato da coloro che lo avevano pilotato e avevano imparato a rispettarlo e ad amarlo).

Frutto di un concetto già obsoleto al momento del suo sviluppo, fallì completamente nel ruolo per cui era stato inizialmente progettato. Pertanto, una volta iniziati i combattimenti sul suolo europeo, avrebbe pagato un prezzo altissimo nelle operazioni.
