At the beginning of the Second World War, MiG was founded by two aircraft engineers, Artyom Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich. Thus began a unique history. Starting with the MiG-1 from 1939 to the MiG-35 of the year 2011, the world famous aircraft manufacturer and its products are presented in this Fact File edition. Numerous pioneering prototypes are described.

MiG 15 - Der Jäger, der den Westen schockte

At the end of the 1940s, the Soviet Union needed a modern fighter aircraft to counter the threat posed by American bombers carrying atomic bombs.
The problems were enormous, as Soviet designers had paid little attention to jet engines as propulsion or to high-speed aerodynamics. By using German and later English technology and the findings of German scientists, the OKB Mikoyan quickly constructed the MiG-15 and the MiG-15bis modification.

Its use in the Warsaw Pact countries to protect the airspace against airspace violators, but above all in the Korean War against American aircraft, was a shock for the West. No one had believed that the Soviet Union had an aircraft that was in some cases superior to the American ones.
Built in large numbers and flown in 40 countries over many years, the MiG-15 was also a test vehicle for many new technical developments. The two-seater MiG-15UTI served as preparation for modern fighter aircraft up to the MiG-21.

The book describes the development, but above all the worldwide combat use of this fighter aircraft. The author benefits from having flown the MiG-15 himself.

MiG-23

The MiG-23 was developed during the Cold War in the Soviet Union. After the American F-111, it was the second variable-sweep wing aircraft to be mass-produced and put into service worldwide. This single-seat fighter was, alongside the MiG-21, one of the most successful combat aircraft produced in the USSR. It was built over a period of nearly 20 years and exported to more than 40 countries.

The MiG-23 saw action in many conflicts and is still in service with some air forces today. The National People's Army of East Germany also operated the MiG-23, a subject covered in a dedicated chapter of the book.
