Bf 110 vs Lancaster - 1942-45 (Osprey)

The RAF introduced the Avro Lancaster in 1942 and used it to spearhead this aerial offensive. In response, the Luftwaffe created an elite nightfighter force based primarily upon the Bf 110.
The Luftwaffe was quick to equip it with airborne radar that allowed it to intercept and destroy Lancasters over Germany. In turn, the RAF adopted countermeasures such as the Monica rearward-looking radar to alert Lancaster crews to the approach of nightfighters.

In May 1943 the Luftwaffe suddenly developed a novel technical and tactical approach to attacking RAF bombers. The new tactic proved amazingly successful, and British bombers could be attacked from below with no warning. For its part, the RAF failed to detect the new German tactic for six crucial months, during which time its Lancaster bombers were almost defenceless against this new threat.
In time, however, the German advantage of surprise was lost and the RAF developed countermeasures to deal with the new threat. The duel between upgraded Bf 110s and Lancasters in the night skies over Germany became increasingly dominated by cutting-edge technology, which would determine the efficacy of strategic bombing.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 - The Luftwaffe's Fighter-Destroyer in World War II (Legends of Warfare)

The concept of a twin-engine fighter that could accompany bomber formations and effectively drive off defending fighters was the rationale behind the creation of the Messerschmitt Bf 110. Initial operations during 1939-40 seemed to justify its existence, but the generally weak level of aerial opposition bred a false sense of security among the aircrews that was thoroughly blunted during the Battle of Britain.
Better fortune attended the Zerstörer's (Destroyer) operational career when utilized in two alternative ways.

First, it proved a steady platform for ground-attack duties, given its heavy cannon and machine gun battery. Even more effective was the switch to a night fighter function, where it proved a deadly weapon along with its Ju 88 contemporary in Germany's Home Defense against the nocturnal operations launched by RAF Bomber Command. Part of the Legends of Warfare series.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 / Me 210 / Me 410 - An Illustrated History

For the first time, this richly illustrated book offers a comprehensive, detailed examination of the legendary Messerschmitt Bf 110, Me 210, and Me 410 series. By 1935 the Bf 109 had made Messerschmitt the leading manufacturer of fighter aircraft in Germany. The twin-engined Bf 110 followed on its heels in 1936, a type the Luftwaffe took on in large numbers as a long-range fighter, heavy-fighter, fighter-bomber, night-fighter and reconnaissance platform.

As its successor, Messerschmitt developed the better performing Me 210, which flew for the first time in 1939. But this airframe soon began manifesting serious design flaws, and accidents with the Me 210 quickly started piling up due to the type's questionable flight handling characteristics. The Luftwaffe refused to accept any more aircraft as a result, and at a stroke the type's overzealous full scale production ground to a halt.

More powerful engines and a number of design changes saw this aircraft produced from 1943 to 1944 under the designation of Me 410, and as such the type gave an excellent accounting of itself in service with the Luftwaffe.

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 Story

The Messerschmitt Bf 110, also known as the Me 110, was a twin-engine fighter-bomber, night fighter, and destroyer aircraft. Highly regarded by Hermann Göring, it played a key role in the Luftwaffe's operations.

This book explores the Bf 110's service history, drawing on pilot and crew accounts as well as records from key units and non-Luftwaffe operators. It covers the aircraft's role in major campaigns, including Poland, the Battle of Britain, North Africa, and the Eastern Front.
A detailed technical analysis examines the aircraft's design and performance, comparing it to rivals such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 57 and Henschel Hs 124, as well as opponents like the French Potez 630/631 and the Polish PZL.38.
The book also provides an overview of the few surviving Bf 110s preserved in museums. With comprehensive coverage of its history, technology, and combat use, this guide offers an in-depth look at one of the Luftwaffe's most notable fighters.
