AD and A-1 Skyraider - Douglas's 'Spad' in Korea and Vietnam (Legends of Warfare)
The U.S. Navy began developing the Skyraider late in World War II, with production starting in 1946. It first saw combat during the Korean War, flown by naval aviators. Over time, its strong airframe and powerful engine allowed it to take on various roles, including attack, reconnaissance, weather monitoring, and electronic warfare.
Though considered outdated by some, the Skyraider was used extensively in Vietnam by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Republic of Vietnam Air Force. Its ability to fly low and slow while carrying a large weapons load made it effective for ground attack and close air support. This heavy payload earned it the nickname "flying dump truck, " while its piston engine in the jet age led to the name "Spad, " referencing the World War I fighter.
