Boeing Field

Even before there were runways, the area south of the city of Seattle was Washington's aviation hub. Charles Hamilton, a daredevil dubbed "Crazy Man of the Air," became the first flyer in the state when he coaxed his Curtiss biplane into the sky over Meadows Racetrack in 1910. He promptly crashed.

With the help of William Boeing and his growing aviation company, Boeing Field opened in 1928. In those early days, brave air travelers could hitch a ride along with bags of mail in cold, noisy biplanes. Bigger, better aircraft soon followed, but wartime intervened.
Thousands of Flying Fortress bombers emerged from Boeing's Plant 2 at the edge of the airfield and winged off to war. In the years after, Boeing Field served a dazzling array of winged machines - from the smallest Piper Cub to Air Force One.

Boeing in Photographs : A Century of Flight

Founded in 1916 by William E. Boeing, a wealthy timber merchant, the mighty Boeing Company's 100-year history spans decades of rich achievement and technological development.
Beginning with the manufacture of seaplanes, fighters and, from the 1930s onwards, huge bombers, Boeing pioneered innovative transports - gigantic airliners, missiles, rockets and most recently vehicles for space exploration and satellites.

Constantly evolving, Boeing set out to develop an entirely new jet transport, and in 1954 the innovative 707 appeared. The 727 and 737 airliners quickly followed and in 1969 the revolutionary 747. By 1975 the 'Jumbo Jet' was being produced in seven different models and new versions continue to be developed to this day.

Aviation author and historian Martin Bowman marks the centenary of Boeing's incorporation in July 1916 with this glorious photographic history, detailing the story of the company from its humble side-project beginnings to its ascent into being one of the world's largest aircraft manufacturers.

Boeing Metamorphosis - Launching the 737 and 747, 1965-1969

This book explores corporate decision-making, workplace challenges, and the key human relationships that drive success. John Andrew, a retired Boeing executive, provides an insider's view of the company's transformation during the 1960s.
As demand for air travel grew, Boeing required more factory space to support new aircraft models. This led to large-scale construction projects, including the 747 assembly plant on 760 acres at Paine Field in Everett, Washington. These massive facilities remain central to Boeing's operations today.
The book traces the company's remarkable growth and evolution into a leader in aviation.

Boeing YC-14 - US Air Force Experimental STOL Aircraft (Legends of Warfare)

The Boeing YC-14, first flown in 1976, was a groundbreaking achievement in aircraft design. Notably, it introduced upper-surface blowing, where jet engine flow was directed downward, combined with boundary-layer control, enabling flight at exceptionally low speeds. The YC-14 program also embraced cutting-edge technologies, such as "fly-by-light" flight controls and digital airframe design, which later became standard at Boeing.

This book not only focuses on the YC-14 itself but also highlights the innovative design team that created it. The team fostered a collaborative, cross-organizational approach, unafraid to push boundaries in developing a highly capable aircraft.
The book offers insights from Boeing and Air Force test pilots, sharing their experiences with the YC-14's handling and performance. It also explores the challenges of designing an entirely new aircraft, from concept to completion.

C-17 Globemaster

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is the most advanced heavy military transport aircraft used by Western forces. It has short takeoff and landing capability and can operate from unpaved runways. Thrust reversers can be used in flight to allow steep landing approaches and reduce the risk of enemy fire. The aircraft can also deploy troops and cargo from any altitude.

These features make the C-17 highly versatile. Since entering service with the US Air Force in 1993, it has proven itself in nearly every conflict involving US forces. Most recently, in August 2021, a single aircraft evacuated 823 people from Kabul.
