Messerschmitt Me 321/323 - The Luftwaffe's Giants in World War II
Messerschmitt-Giganten und der Fliegerhorst Regensburg-Obertraubling 1936-1945
The Messerschmitt giants were the aircraft in World War II that made it possible for the first time in the history of aviation to transport heavy guns, trucks and even tanks by air. With its 55-meter wingspan, the giant towered over all other aircraft in the German Air Force. First as the Messerschmitt Me 321 cargo glider and later as the six-engine Me 323 transport aircraft with 6 000 hp, the giants were in use from 1941 until almost the end of the war. Whenever crises arose on the front lines, whether on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1944 or in the Mediterranean in 1943, the Me 321 and Me 323 were at the center of the action.
The history of the Regensburg-Obertraubling air base is inextricably linked to the giants Me 321 and Me 323. Preparations for the construction of the Me 321 cargo glider began here at the end of 1940 by the "Warsaw South" command. As the use of the Me 321 was only possible at great expense, the first motorized test aircraft of the Me 323 type were ready for testing as early as the beginning of 1942. Production of the Me 323 was stopped in January 1944.
No other Luftwaffe air base was as involved in industrial aircraft production as the one in Regensburg-Obertraubling. This book provides a historical overview of a chapter of recent German contemporary history. Numerous living contemporary witnesses were interviewed and made valuable contributions.
