Aircraft manufacturers: books - Russia / USSR - history

A book on aircraft manufacturers in Russia and the USSR? Explore here illustrated books on the history of aviation and aircraft from Russia and the USSR.

Soviet Aircraft Industry

Soviet aircraft industry was an essential part of the USSR's campaign for global dominance in the twentieth century. Thanks to the thick fog of secrecy that enveloped it throughout the Cold War, it has long inspired the fascination of analysts and enthusiasts in the West; until the collapse of the USSR in 1991, details of Soviet aircraft were often a matter of conjecture.
This book aims to uncover fully the mystery surrounding this topic.

Drawing on original and previously unpublished information obtained directly from the former USSR, Soviet Aircraft Industry examines the unique characteristics of Soviet-designed aircraft - particularly military types, which were the cause of great concern to the West.
Further, by virtue of the industry's central role throughout Soviet history, this book provides a rare and important perspective into the broader theme of Russia's great communist experiment.

Lavochkin Fighters of the Second World War

Lavochkin fighters remain little known in the West, although with the Yakovlev fighter series, they were the backbone of the Red Air Force fighter force during the Second World War.
This is a comprehensive history of the three main variants of the Lavochkin fighter series during the war: the partially successful LaGG-3 inline-engine fighter; the successful radial-engine La-5 fighter; and the superb radial-engine La-7 fighter, one of the best piston-engine fighter aircraft of the entire war, even surpassing the Spitfire and Bf 109 in terms of agility and performance at low altitudes.

Both the design and history of these fighters are featured, including how the mediocre inline-engine LaGG-3 was turned into a superb fighter by the replacement of the Klimov inline engine by the Shvetsov M-82 radial engine.
Besides describing the wartime designs, a section on the post-war successors to the Second World War fighters - the all metal La-9 and La-11 - that saw extensive service, and accurate colour profiles that detail all variants are included in this stunning book.

Berijew - seit 1934 (Typenkompass)

The Russian aircraft manufacturer Beriev, founded in 1932, is one of the big names in the business. The company specialized early on in the development and manufacture of amphibious flying boats.

However, conventional machines were also developed and manufactured. Well-known models include the turboprop-powered anti-submarine flying boat Beriev Be-12, the unconventional experimental aircraft WWA-14 and the jet-powered amphibious flying boat Be-200. The company is currently working on an extra-heavy amphibian with a take-off weight of 1000 tons.

Rudolf Höfling gives the reader everything there is to know about this topic.
