Mustang, une américaine en France (3e édition)
The Ford Mustang has always been perceived very differently on each side of the Atlantic. Created as a new American automobile concept, the Mustang was aimed at a very broad, young and popular clientele in the United States. In France, the American car of the time had an image as loaded as its chrome: that of the nouveau riche of the post-war, with ostentatious, even provocative behavior.
When the Mustang arrived in France, the image it was subjected to as "the American" was quickly counterbalanced by an avalanche of very diverse clichés, more or less provoked, which would ultimately turn out to be rather positive. Its "muscle car" performance is surprising, because Europeans have rather contempt for these mountains of power without technical refinement, which the Americans represent for them.
The Mustang breaks yet another image of the American by making it sympathetic, closer and more accessible, with in particular a certain policeman from Saint-Tropez at the wheel.
It will subsequently become "the" romantic car of the 1960s with the famous "chabadabada" of Claude Lelouch. Undisputed star of "Un homme et une femme", cult film Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966, the Ford Mustang deserves, alongside Anouck Aimé and Jean-Louis Trintignant, an acting award, so much did its performance make an entire generation fantasize. The stars and opinion leaders who covered the tabloids of the time, "Cinémonde" and other "Salut les Copains", Johnny Hallyday, Sheila and Ringo, Claude François, Jacques Anquetil, and so many others will provide free promotion.
Even beyond the specific image that the Mustang has created in Europe, there is indeed a French vision of the Mustang. It is through this particular perception that we will wander through the different eras to have another look at the different models, by rubbing shoulders with the users and their cars, which constitute these real families with very marked characteristics.
