Lysander
The Westland Lysander is one of Britain's most recognizable aircraft. Initially designed for army co-operation, its role quickly shifted to aerial liaison and ground support, where it gained fame. During the early stages of World War II, a Lysander was a welcome sight for downed pilots at sea and agents trying to return to England at night. It was also heavily used at air gunnery schools, where it towed targets for fighter pilots' training.
The Lysander was among the first short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft, thanks to its unique wing design with flaps and slats. It served with air forces in Britain, India, Egypt, and Canada. Despite its bulky appearance, the Lysander's capabilities have always impressed, proving its versatility in various roles.
This updated edition of "Aeroplane Icons: Lysander" highlights the aircraft's importance and enduring legacy, demonstrating why the Lysander remains one of the world's most iconic flying machines.
