Vulcan Units of the Cold War

The best of the three RAF jet bombers in the early years of the Cold War, the Vulcan was designed as the Avro 698, and possessed fighter-like manoeuvrability at low level despite its size. First flown in August 1952, the Vulcan entered service in February 1957. Most were equipped to carry the Blue Steel stand-off missile, but in 1966 around 50 Vulcans were re-deployed in a tactical low-level bombing role. Three flew during the Falklands War, and the last Vulcans in service were used as aerial tankers until April 1984.

This book examines the design of the Vulcan, exploring the improvements made to its engine and its evolving combat role. The illustrations include many in-flight photographs and detailed colour profiles. This is a timely examination of a distinctive and ground-breaking aircraft.

Contents: Forging the hammer: development of the Vulcan - Cold War deterrent: high level lay down - Long range stand-off - Low level sanctuary - Colonial adventures - The Versatile Vulcan (MRR and tanking) - Black Buck: the Falklands bombing - SEAD missions.

The Avro Vulcan - a History

The delta-wing design of the subsonic bomber Avro Vulcan was years ahead of its time in terms of design when the Ministry accepted the proposal in 1947. Based on top secret Luftwaffe material after the end of the Second World War, the first prototype flew on 18 May 1951 and it went on to serve in the RAF from 1952 to 1984. During this time it carried Britain's first nuclear weapon, the gravity bomb, and played an important part in the deterrence policy of the Cold War.

This book provides a complete history of the design and development of Britain's iconic and much loved bomber, covering the period from 1947 to 1984, when it was finally withdrawn due to mounting costs.
The history takes in trials and development, taking flight, and the Vulcan B.2 and Black Buck attacks in the Falklands War, and provides details of all 136 airframes including completion dates, operational services in unit order, worldwide goodwill and flag-waving missions, making it a valuable record of this graceful and famous bomber aircraft.

Vulcan's Hammer - V-Force Aircraft and Weapons Projects Since 1945

At the height of the Cold War it was Britain's V-Force and its Valiant, Vulcan and Victor bombers that carried the UK's nuclear deterrent from the mid Fifties until the end of the Sixties. Their nuclear arsenal included not just freefall bombs but far more advanced weapons such as the Blue Steel stand-off missile. Blue Steel was intended to form the basis of many extremely advanced projects, such as the Z.101 research aircraft which would have given Britain the global lead in aerospace and weapons technology.
"Vulcan's Hammer" describes the development of these advanced weapons and the aircraft that were intended to carry them and examines the post-war alternatives to the Vulcan, Victor and Valiant whilst outlining the aircraft that were to replace these types, such as the Avro Type 730, English Electric P.10 and Vickers SP.4. Supporting types such as the Bristol RA.6 reconnaissance and Avro unmanned vehicles are also described for the first time.

This book also considers Avro's Weapon Research Division's work on improving Blue Steel and its further development into a research type for Britain's aerospace industry, with the aim of providing hypersonic aircraft and satellite launchers.
Illustrated with over 200 photographs, general arrangement drawings and specially commissioned artwork, Vulcan's Hammer presents the story of an alternative V-force.
