Podpisanie Austriackiego Traktatu Państwowego 15 maja 1955 r. rozpoczęło odbudowę Austriackich Sił Powietrznych. 15 lipca 1955 r. powołano Urząd Obrony Krajowej, a 13 wrzesnia powstał Wydział III/L (Lotnictwo) pod kierownictwem majora Josefa Bizeka.

Oficjalną datą narodzin nowych sił powietrznych był 9 grudnia 1955 r., kiedy podpułkownik policji Gustav Hauck wystartował o godz. 10: 01 samolotem Jakowlew Jak-18 (3A-AB), podarowanym przez Związek Radziecki, z bazy lotniczej Brumowski w Langenlebarn. Był to pierwszy lot samolotu z austriackimi oznaczeniami po ponad 17 latach przerwy.
Początkowe wyposażenie Bundesheer było skromne, głównie składało się z darów i taniego, używanego sprzętu od byłych okupantów.

Although the Danube Monarchy had been one of the leading states in the field of aviation in the years before 1914, it was only possible to send air companies into the field with great effort when the war broke out. Because the aircraft available was not suitable for war, aircraft and engines had to be bought in a hurry from the allied Germany.
In 1915, it was finally possible to boost aircraft production and pilot training. Towards the end of the war, however, the general economic exhaustion of Austria-Hungary and the superiority of the Allies became noticeable.

In this book, Walter Blasi and Bernhard Tötschinger create a unique monument to the Imperial and Royal Aviation Corps. They outline the history of these young troops and have compiled a large number of previously unpublished images. The result is a fascinating depiction of this previously barely documented part of Austro-Hungarian military history.
