F-104 Starfighter (Pilot's Flight Operation Instructions)

Created by famed Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson, the F-104 Starfighter was designed to compete with Soviet Mig-15s. Equipped with a huge and powerful J79 engine, the aircraft could reach speeds well in excess of Mach 2.0, while its thin, trapezoidal wing provided extremely low drag with terrific acceleration and rate of climb.

Unforgiving and sensitive to control inputs, the F-104 killed many pilots and developed a reputation as a "widow-maker". Despite its shortcomings, the Starfighter enjoyed a long career.
It flew in the air support role during "Rolling Thunder" in the Vietnam War. It also saw extensive service in foreign air forces and NATO. NASA continued to use the F-104 as a support aircraft until 1995.

This pilot's flight operating handbook was originally produced by the USAF. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, supersonic jet interceptor aircraft originally developed for the United States Air Force by Lockheed. One of the Century Series of aircraft, it was operated by the air forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004.
A total of 2,578 Starfighters were produced and deployed, mostly by NATO members.

Le Lockheed F-104 Starfighter était un intercepteur supersonique américain à moteur unique, largement utilisé pendant la guerre froide, principalement comme chasseur-bombardier.
Conçu par Lockheed comme chasseur de jour pour l'US Air Force et membre de la "Century Series", il fut transformé au début des années 1960 en avion multirôle tout temps. Produit également dans plusieurs autres pays, il servit au sein de 15 forces aériennes.

Malgré ses performances élevées, le Starfighter acquit une réputation de faible sécurité, en particulier dans la Luftwaffe. Entre 1961 et 1989, l'armée de l'air allemande perdit 292 des 916 appareils et 116 pilotes. Ce taux d'accidents élevé provoqua de vives critiques publiques et valut à l'avion le surnom de "faiseur de veuves".

German Starfighters (Volume 2) - The Story in Colour: Training and Service

Ce deuxième volume consacré aux Starfighter allemands traite de la formation et du service opérationnel de ces avions de chasse. L'auteur, Klaus Kropf, totalise près de dix années de service sur F-104, avec environ 1 900 heures de vol.

Après une formation de base au pilotage au Texas, il suivit l'entraînement sur Starfighter à la base de Luke, en Arizona, de juin 1971 à février 1972. Il effectua ensuite sa conversion en Europe à Jever, puis servit pendant plusieurs années comme pilote de chasseur-bombardier F-104G au sein du Jagdbombergeschwader 31 à Nörvenich. À la fin de 1980, il rejoignit la Tri-National Tornado Training Establishment à la RAF Cottesmore, au Royaume-Uni, où il exerça durant trois ans comme instructeur Tornado.

Bien que sa carrière sur Starfighter se soit achevée depuis longtemps, son attachement à cet avion demeure intact.

The name Starfighter is legendary! The rocket-like fighter flew for the first time in 1954 and soon afterward all previous climb time, altitude and speed records were shattered, because the machine consisted almost entirely of an engine and razor-sharp stub wings.

The German Bundeswehr also flew the model as the F-104G. The Starfighter's reputation is still legendary and Gerhard Lang has erected a monument to it here.
