Junkers 1895-1969

Junkers Ju 287 - The World's First Swept-Wing Jet Aircraft

In the summer of 1944, as the Second World War drew to a close, an unusual airplane took to the skies over Leipzig-Brandis on its maiden flight. It was the prototype version of the Ju 287 V1, a four-engine jet bomber. With its forward swept wings, the design was a critical milestone in the annals of aviation technology and made the Ju 287 the first swept-wing design in the world.

One of the world's most interesting airplanes is revealed through many previously unpublished reports, photographs and drawings. It is an airplane whose revolutionary design played a major role in the postwar development of jet aircraft, in both the East and the West. This book fills a gap in the material covering the first chapter of the jet era.

Turbulent Journey - The Jumo Engine, Operation Paperclip, and the American Dream

Germany built the first operational jet aircraft during World War II, the Messerschmitt Me 262. Siegfried Decher was part of the engineering team that designed the engines that powered the 262. At the end of the war, Decher was nearly stranded in the Soviet Occupation Zone, but the US military made contact and offered a way out.
As the principal responsible for a control system in the Jumo engine, Decher was of value to the Allies. Plans to evacuate during Operation Paperclip fell through. After a detour in France, Decher reached American shores several years later, where he enjoyed a successful career in the civil aviation industry.

This untold story of early jet development, surviving the collapse of the Reich, and starting over in America is recounted by Siegfried's son, Reiner. Reiner, an accomplished engineer in his own right, constructs the story through a combination of his own memories and original letters and documents from his family archive.

Die letzten Junkers-Flugzeuge (III) - Junkers Ju 86, Ju 87, Ju 88., Ju 90, Ju 388 und Baade 152

Of the approximately 30 000 Junkers aircraft that were built from 1915 in the thirty-year history of the Junkers production network, more than 24 000 aircraft were bombers and reconnaissance aircraft of the Junkers Ju 86, Ju 87, Ju 88 type, as well as their further developments. Only five aircraft survived the post-war period in England and the USA.

Due to the small number of original aircraft still in existence, the 1980s saw the start of the salvage of aircraft that had mostly been left behind in remote locations during the war. The worldwide museum fleet of Junkers aircraft from the Second World War now includes 18 museum aircraft, which are supplemented by eight replicas, some of which are still airworthy.

In addition to three other aircraft that are still at their crash sites in Scandinavia, 12 relatively well-preserved underwater wrecks are now known. In total, 41 objects exist today that represent the era of "late" Junkers developments.
They are presented in the third volume of the "Last Junkers Aircraft" series.
