The launch of the Dauphine in March 1956 (after the success of the 4 CV) marked an important step for the Billancourt company, finally offering it a real vision of the future.
It was in this climate of serenity that the pretty Renault Floride was born in 1959. A strong automotive symbol of the early 1960s, the Floride was a daring gamble, but the consumer reception was there!
This book aims to retrace the career of the Floride and its sister the Caravelle, from the genesis of the model to its eventful presentation. It explores in detail the different vintages constituting its eight-year presence on the French and foreign markets.

Dauphine - Souvenirs, souvenirs

When Renault unveiled the Dauphine on March 6 1956, did the Régie expect the tremendous success that awaited its new model? Of course, everything had been thought of for that: marketing studies, technical reflections, a design according to new working methods inspired by the United States, a desire to create a quality product meeting an expectation as broad as it was precise...
But still: more than two million copies produced in barely twelve years! A car circulating in France, but also everywhere in Europe and in the most remote corners of the world (American continent, Australia, Asia...). And above all, a tremendous popularity: even more than the 4 CV, the Dauphine remains one of the most emblematic French cars. There was at least one in every family in France! So, it was normal to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary through a work in the form of a tribute.

A true souvenir album with its abundant iconography, this book also offers a historical and technical study allowing us to gain a more precise understanding of the career of this automotive phenomenon.

La naissance de la 4CV

1939, Berlin Motor Show. Ferdinand Picard and Charles-Edmond Serre, two engineers from Renault, are impressed by German vehicles. Inspired by the small but ingenious KDF Wagen - the famous "Beetle" -, they return to France with the idea of a similar model of car for modest budgets.

But in just a few months, war breaks out, France capitulates and the Renault factory in Boulogne-Billancourt is requisitioned by the Nazi army. However, they do not abandon their idea. They are convinced that after the inevitable victory of the Allies, France, in full reconstruction, will need a real car accessible to all. In secret, in underground workshops, under the din of the bombings, they begin to draw up the plans and imagine the engine of what will become the future 4CV...

Thanks to Dugomier and Bruno Bazile (Garage de Paris), discover in comics the incredible story of the "quatre pattes", probably the most famous of French popular cars - the first to sell more than a million copies!

La Renault 4 CV de mon père (2e édition)

Designed under the Occupation in defiance of the Germans of the time, the 4 CV is a truly romantic adventure. Often considered the automobile of recovery, an optimistic symbol of the 1950s, this car worthy of national heritage was driven by a very large number of French people.
During its presentation at the 33rd Paris Motor Show in October 1946, Pierre Lefaucheux, the chairman and CEO of the very young Régie Renault, addressed an audience of attentive journalists: "We must eliminate this truly outdated notion of the automobile as a luxury object remaining the preserve of the privileged wealthy and increase general well-being by making the automobile available to the greatest number". The Puce, the Quatre-pattes, the 4 CV, built in 1 105 547 units, achieved its goal.

La Renault Colorale de mon père

October 1950: the Régie nationale des usines Renault unveils its Colorale range. Half-tourist, half-military, it is structured around five models: a family estate, the Prairie, a estate intended for hot countries, the Savane, a taxi, a panel van and a chassis-cab. All these cars are equipped with the famous 85 side-valve engine, known since before the war. In the eyes of the Régie's managers, such variety would appeal to a wide clientele. However, despite a fairly encouraging start, orchestrated by often spectacular long-distance expeditions, the Colorales' career quickly runs out of steam. As the seasons go by, Renault has to face the facts: despite the qualities of these large cars, the market is smaller than expected. At the beginning of 1957, the marketing of the Colorales discreetly ends. Their career continued for many years to come in the hands of many craftsmen, won over by their robustness and rusticity.

This book is part of the series "La voiture de mon père" and contains numerous period documents, 230 often unpublished photos and the technical characteristics of the different models.

Born under enemy occupation, later not exactly loved by most employees in the state-owned Renault company, these circumstances could have actually meant the end of the "Quatre Chevaux", the French Volkswagen, before its story had even begun.
