Amsterdam-Brussel - De historie van de Benelux-treinen

Dit boek behandelt de geschiedenis van de internationale treinverbinding Amsterdam-Brussel gedurende de periode 1937 tot en met 2018. Auteur Cock Koelewijn verdeelt het in tien hoofdstukken, waarbij hij de oorspronkelijke plannen, de elektrificatie van het grensbaanvak Roosendaal - Essen, de Benelux-Hondekoptreinstellen, de jaren zestig, de invoering van nieuw materieel in 1974 en 1986, de Fyra- en HSL-plannen, en de verhuizing van de Benelux-verbinding naar de HSL in 2018 behandelt.

Het boek omvat tevens vijf hoofdstukken over diverse materieeltypen in de Benelux-dienst sinds 1957, en zes bijlagen over onder andere de spanningssluis bij Roosendaal, dienstregeling, treinnummers, en de Benelux Tourrail-kaart.

Het bevat honderden afbeeldingen, hoofdzakelijk in kleur en veelal niet eerder gepubliceerd. De illustraties variëren van officiële documenten tot de opening van de verbinding in 1957, de ontwikkeling en bouw van het materieel, treinstellen, locomotieven, rijtuigen, en zelfs treinkaartjes.

Benelux Railways

Nederland, België en Luxemburg hebben elk hun eigen spoorwegsysteem, dat nauw met elkaar verbonden is. Alle drie de landen bieden regelmatige passagierstreinen, meestal elk uur of vaker, zowel binnenlands als over de grens.

In Nederland verzorgt de Nederlandse Spoorwegen het grootste deel van de diensten, aangevuld door Arriva en Syntus op enkele lokale lijnen.

In België worden alle passagiersdiensten uitgevoerd door NMBS/SNCB, die zowel Vlaanderen als Wallonië bedient. Luxemburgs CFL heeft een uitgebreid netwerk met frequente binnenlandse verbindingen en talrijke internationale treinen, onder meer uit Duitsland en Frankrijk.

John Law bezoekt de spoorwegen in deze regio sinds begin jaren zeventig en heeft bijna alle lijnen met reizigersverkeer bereisd. In de loop der jaren heeft hij de veranderingen gefotografeerd en een grote collectie opgebouwd. Dit boek toont een selectie van zijn beste beelden.

Rundnasen und Kartoffelkäfer - Die NoHAB-Europalokomotiven

De diesellocomotieven met de bijnamen "Rundnase", "Dicknase" of "Kartoffelkäfer" hebben een cultstatus bereikt. Vanaf 1954 werden 159 locomotieven van dit type onder een EMD-licentie gebouwd bij NoHAB in Trollhättan (Zweden) voor Noorwegen, Denemarken en Hongarije. Daarnaast produceerde AFB 40 locomotieven voor België en vier voor Luxemburg. Het ontwerp is gebaseerd op de Amerikaanse F-serie en B-klasse, maar aangepast aan Europese eisen.

De laatste reguliere inzet eindigde in 2000/2001 in Hongarije, Noorwegen en Denemarken. In België waren ze enkele jaren eerder uit dienst, in Luxemburg in 1994. Toch zijn veel van deze robuuste locomotieven nog steeds in gebruik bij particuliere spoorwegen, vooral in Denemarken, Zweden en Duitsland.

Het eerste deel van het geïllustreerde boek blikt terug op de laatste jaren bij de staatsspoorwegen. Het tweede deel richt zich op de nog steeds actieve locomotieven, met de nadruk op Duitsland.
