BAC One-Eleven - The Whole Story

En août 1963, le BAC One-Eleven effectua son premier vol. Avec soixante appareils commandés - plus de la moitié provenant des États-Unis - il suscita un intérêt international inédit pour un avion civil britannique. Premier grand programme de la nouvelle British Aircraft Corporation, le One-Eleven fut entièrement conçu et construit par l'entreprise et resta en production durant toute son existence de dix-sept ans, même lorsque les résultats financiers étaient faibles.

Son dernier vol commercial en Europe eut lieu en mars 2002. Cette édition révisée commémore le cinquantième anniversaire du premier vol et retrace son histoire avec clarté. Stephen Skinner associe de nouvelles recherches à un ensemble d'illustrations en noir et blanc et en couleur ainsi qu'à des annexes détaillées pour examiner le développement, l'exploitation et l'importance durable de l'appareil. Lors du premier vol de la One-Eleven, BAC semblait avoir pris une avance nette sur ses concurrents américains. L'appareil a précédé la DC-9 et est apparu bien avant que Boeing ne lance la 737. Pourtant, Douglas a vendu plus de 1 000 DC-9, puis la série MD-80 et plus tard le Boeing 717, alors que BAC n'a produit que 244 One-Eleven. Cette différence fait partie intégrante de l'histoire de cet avion.

L'ouvrage retrace la conception et le développement de la One-Eleven dans un contexte de fortes restructurations industrielles. Il décrit aussi sa carrière en service, où sa structure solide lui a permis de voler jusqu'au 21e siècle. Quelques exemplaires sont encore en état de vol.
