The origins and evolution of each warplane class or category, such as fighters, bombers, and reconnaissance planes are discussed in chapters for each category.

Aero engines are also discussed, together with procurement decisions and production quantities. German aviation production and procurement strategies are discussed in the context of the German strategic situation.
