Con la firma del trattato di Stato austriaco il 15 maggio 1955, è iniziata la ricostruzione dell'aeronautica austriaca. Il 15 luglio 1955 è stato creato l'Ufficio per la Difesa Nazionale, e il 13 settembre è stato formato il Dipartimento III/L (Aviazione) sotto la direzione del Maggiore Josef Bizek.

La nascita ufficiale delle nuove forze aeree è avvenuta il 9 dicembre 1955, quando il tenente colonnello di polizia Gustav Hauck è decollato alle 10: 01 con lo Jakowlev Jak-18 (3A-AB), un regalo dell'Unione Sovietica, dalla base aerea di Brumowski a Langenlebarn. Although the Danube Monarchy had been one of the leading states in the field of aviation in the years before 1914, it was only possible to send air companies into the field with great effort when the war broke out. Because the aircraft available was not suitable for war, aircraft and engines had to be bought in a hurry from the allied Germany.
In 1915, it was finally possible to boost aircraft production and pilot training. Towards the end of the war, however, the general economic exhaustion of Austria-Hungary and the superiority of the Allies became noticeable.

In this book, Walter Blasi and Bernhard Tötschinger create a unique monument to the Imperial and Royal Aviation Corps. They outline the history of these young troops and have compiled a large number of previously unpublished images. The result is a fascinating depiction of this previously barely documented part of Austro-Hungarian military history.
