Nieuport - A Biography of Edouard Nieuport 1875-1911

This biography of Edouard Nieuport, written by his grandson Gérard Pommier, details the brilliant solutions he applied to cycling and automobiles before turning to aircraft later made famous by pilots of nearly all Allied nations in the First World War.

Described are the achievements of this extraordinarily talented engineer (who died at age thirty-six), of his brother Charles (killed less than two years later), and of the splendid company bearing their name which at one time led the world in airplane production, and continued its activity until 1936.
The book is enhanced by many unpublished photographs from the Nieuport / Pommier archives.

Nieuport 11/16 Bebe vs Fokker Eindecker - Western Front 1916 (Osprey)

The appearance in July 1915 of the Fokker E I heralded a reign of terror over the Western Front that the Allies called the 'Fokker Scourge'. The French Nieuport 11 was one type desperately thrown into action to counter the Fokkers. The swirling dogfights between this fighter - and its more powerful but more unwieldy stablemate, the Nieuport 16 - and a succession of improved Fokkers, the E II, E III and E IV, came to symbolise air combat in World War I.

This book gives a detailed look at the developmental history of the fighters, contrasting the interrupter gear-equipped Fokker with the more improvised solution incorporated in the Nieuport - a machine gun fitted to the upper wing to avoid the propeller entirely. The Germans went on to abandon the monoplane in favour of a new and deadly generation of biplane fighters, based on the lessons learned from these vicious engagements and influenced by the success of the French Nieuport.

Contents: Introduction - Chronology - Design and Development - Technical Specifications - The Strategic Situation - The Combatants - Combat - Statistics and Analysis - Aftermath - Bibliography - Index.

Nieuport 28 - America's First Fighter

The first squadrons of American-trained fighter pilots to enter combat in April 1918 during World War I were equipped with the Nieuport 28. Douglas Campbell, Jimmy Meissner, and Eddie Rickenbacker, were among those who cut their teeth on the Nieuport 28 fighter and gained the experience, skills, and confidence necessary to survive and succeed in aerial combat.

This book provides an exhaustive history of the Nieuport 28, from its design inception in 1917, through its combat service with the U.S. Air Service, and into the postwar era. Replete with pilot reports, maps, over 400 photographs, and specially commissioned technical drawings and color profiles this book is a fitting testament to the Nieuport 28.

Nieuport Aces of World War 1 (Osprey)

The French Nieuport company provided the Allied air forces with the first true fighter scout of World War 1 in the shape of the diminutive XI of 1915. Based on the Bebe racer, built for the abandoned Gordon-Bennett Trophy of the previous year, the aircraft utilised a sesquiplane (lower wing much smaller than the upper wing) arrangement which gave the XI extreme manoeuvrability.
It was the only scout respected by the all-conquering German Fokker E-series of 1915-16, and was flown by French, British, Russian, Belgian and Italian aces. The XI was replaced from May 1916 onwards by the bigger and more powerful XVII. which proved to be one of the best fighters of World War 1.

Contents: Setting the scene - British Aces - French Aces - Other Allied Aces - Appendices.
