Bombowce torpedowe pojawiły się po raz pierwszy w późnych latach I wojny światowej, ale swoją najskuteczniejszą rolę odegrały w II wojnie światowej. Do najsłynniejszych ataków należą: Tarent, gdzie Fairey Swordfish zniszczył włoską flotę wojenną, oraz niesławny, zaskakujący atak Japończyków na Pearl Harbor.
