Przez długi okres objęty tą książką istniały dwa odrębne państwa niemieckie: Niemcy Zachodnie i Niemcy Wschodnie. Pod rządami bardzo odmiennych reżimów politycznych, produkowały one niezwykle innowacyjne i wydajne maszyny wyścigowe.

After mopeds and mokicks came the big two-wheeled world: as an alternative to larger, more expensive machines, many apprentices and students found happiness in the 27 hp class.
The range of products offered by manufacturers was huge. Nevertheless, they all had one thing in common: whether they had 400 cc displacement, maybe 500 cc, or even 250, they never had more than 27 hp.

Although motorcycle construction experienced its first boom at the beginning of the 20th century, motorcycles only slowly began to establish themselves in the military during the First World War.
In the Weimar Republic, the Reichswehr increasingly commissioned motorcycle rifle units on heavy motorcycles. It was not until 1938 that BMW and Zündapp began developing so-called super-heavy motorcycles with low-range gears, reverse gear and sidecar drive. After the war, two-stroke engines were mainly used.
