Met de ondertekening van het Oostenrijkse Staatsverdrag op 15 mei 1955 begon de heropbouw van de Oostenrijkse luchtmacht. Op 15 juli 1955 werd het Bureau voor Defensie opgericht en op 13 september werd onder leiding van majoor Josef Bizek Afdeling III/L (Lucht) opgericht.

De officiële geboorte van de nieuwe luchtmacht was op 9 december 1955, toen politie-luitenant-kolonel Gustav Hauck om 10: 01 uur opsteeg met de Jakowlew Jak-18 (3A-AB), een geschenk van de Sovjet-Unie, vanaf Fliegerhorst Brumowski in Langenlebarn. Het was de eerste vlucht van een Oostenrijks gemarkeerd vliegtuig na meer dan 17 jaar.
De beginnende uitrusting van het Bundesheer was bescheiden en bestond voornamelijk uit geschenken en goedkoop aangeschaft tweedehands materieel van de voormalige bezettingsmachten.

In dit boek documenteert luchtvaartexpert Rudolf Höfling alle door het Oostenrijkse Bundesheer aangeschafte en geleasede vliegtuigen en helikopters van 1955 tot heden, waaronder de Jakowlew Jak-18, Bell 47G2, Saab J 29F Tonne, Saab 350E Draken en Eurofighter EF 2000, met gedetailleerde teksten en talloze afbeeldingen.

Although the Danube Monarchy had been one of the leading states in the field of aviation in the years before 1914, it was only possible to send air companies into the field with great effort when the war broke out. Because the aircraft available was not suitable for war, aircraft and engines had to be bought in a hurry from the allied Germany.
In 1915, it was finally possible to boost aircraft production and pilot training. Towards the end of the war, however, the general economic exhaustion of Austria-Hungary and the superiority of the Allies became noticeable.

In this book, Walter Blasi and Bernhard Tötschinger create a unique monument to the Imperial and Royal Aviation Corps. They outline the history of these young troops and have compiled a large number of previously unpublished images.
