Hardly any other type of locomotive is as popular as the Swiss crocodiles, which owe their nickname to their characteristic appearance and to their long presence in everyday railway life.

From 1920 onwards, they played a key role in traction on the Gotthard for several decades. But the hard-to-miss "crocodiles" were also in tireless use on other railway lines from the very beginning, mainly pulling heavy and long freight trains. This made the locomotives synonymous with power, reliability and durability.

This volume of locomotive legends describes the history, development and use in words and pictures.

Altbau-Elektroloks

The fifties and sixties: On the still relatively few electrified lines of the Bundesbahn, in addition to the first new-build machines, old electric locomotives still dominate the scene - locomotives that date back to the Reichsbahn era or were even designed or built by the state railways.
But there were also some locomotives that were rebuilt in the fifties due to a lack of new designs ready for production: E 04, E 16, E 17, E 18, E 19, E 32, E 44, E 60, E 63, E 52, E 75, E 91, E 93 and E 94, unusual types such as the E 80, E 170 or the battery-powered small locomotives, and also 50 Hz machines in the Höllental.

For this book, Dr. Rolf Brüning has compiled a good hundred photographs from his unique color slide archive, which take us back 40 or 50 years to a long-gone era of railways. In introductory texts, the author explains the technical development that led to these machines.

Die Ellok-Baureihen E 01 und E 71¹ - Entwicklung, Einsatz und Verbleib der ES 9-19 und EG 511-537

In March 1914, the Royal Prussian State Railway put its first series-produced electric locomotives into operation. This book is a comprehensive review of the locomotive history of that time.
The reader not only learns a lot about the first Prussian series-produced electric locomotives ES 9 to 19 (from 1926 series E 01), EG 511 to 537 (from 1926 series E 71¹) and the EB 1 to 3 drive frames (decommissioned in 1922) that were related to freight locomotives, but the authors also convey interesting facts about the "companions" that accompanied them at home and abroad, as well as the technology typical of the time.

The paths of the two series are traced in detail and placed in a historical context. While the E 01 series (ex ES 9 to 19) ended its career in 1929, the small, indestructible freight train locomotives of the E 71¹ series began their career in the Wiesen- and Wehratal valleys in Baden after operations in central Germany, Silesia and Bavaria at the beginning of the 1930s.

The scheduled service for the E 71¹ series only ended after 45 years of service, in 1959. On both sides of the German-German border, their significance for the history of technology was recognized, in the east with the restored E 71 30 in the Dresden Transport Museum, in the west with the E 71 19 (now in Koblenz-Lützel) and the E 71 28 (now in Berlin).

Reichsbahn-Elloks in Schlesien: Entwicklung, Einsatz und Verbleib von 1909 bis heute

The electrification of railway lines in what was then Prussian Silesia began over 100 years ago. The hilly routes required special AC electric locomotives, which were developed for the electrified Silesian network.

This book is devoted to the freight train locomotives EG 538 to EG 594 (E 90, E 91, E 95), the passenger train locomotives EP 202 to EP 252 (E 30, E 42, E 50) and the experimental locomotives E 18 01, E 16 101, E 21.
The standard work describes the development from the first Prussian designs to the express train experimental locomotives of the 1920s.

The authors shed light on previously neglected aspects and go beyond the last days of operation in Silesia in the spring of 1945.
One section deals with the time between the cessation of electric operations and the resumption of operations in July 1945.
After being transported to the Soviet Union as reparations, the locomotives returned to the GDR. The fate of those who returned home and those who went directly to southern Germany are examined in detail, including the E 21, E 215, E 421-2, E 503-4, E 918-9, E 927 and E 95 series.
Sketches, detailed drawings and unusual perspectives of the locomotives also offer valuable inspiration for model railroaders.
