In the early 1970s, the Renault car range offered popular saloons with the Renault 4 and 6, family saloons with the Renault 12 and 16, and sports coupes with the Renault 15 and 17. The conversion to front-wheel drive was complete and, with the opening of the European market, Renault had to prepare to face competitors in the upper segment for which it did not yet have any models, unlike other French manufacturers.
It was the Renault 20 and 30 that would concretize this move upmarket from 1975. These models would include many innovations while retaining the technical and practical design of their predecessors.

La Renault 21 de mon père

The Renault 21 appeared in March 1986. Born as a three-box saloon, quickly supported by the Nevada estate, it embodied the transition between two eras at the Régie. To design it, at a time when the company's situation did not allow for any risk-taking, it was necessary to draw on what already existed.
With a new management, a new qualitative orientation: the 21 phase 2 would adapt successfully, while further expanding its range with a five-door saloon. In addition to Europe, the 21 would invest in three continents and be assembled in Taiwan, Morocco, Argentina and Spain.

At the time, no other "car for living" from the Régie could offer such a wide range. Its qualities and performances allowed it to set a record and shine on the circuit. This rich history fully justifies the place that the 21 occupies among the emblematic youngtimers of the 1980s and 1990s.
