The history of the quad, or ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle), begins in the 1950s with a six-wheel model. In the 1970s, Honda popularized the three-wheel All-Terrain Cycle (ATC). The first four-wheel quad appeared in 1983 with the Suzuki QuadRunner LT125, followed in 1986 by the Honda FourTrax TRX350 4×4 with four-wheel drive.

Over the years, multiple manufacturers joined the market: Japanese (Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Honda), Spanish (Gas Gas), Austrian (KTM), Taiwanese (Kymco, Sym), American (Arctic Cat, Polaris), and Canadian (BRP).
Quads first gained popularity in the United States before spreading to Europe. In France, the quad became prominent in the 1990s, especially with the arrival of approved "quadricycles." Thousands are sold each year.
