The appearance of the first quad, or ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) dates back to the 1950s, when it had six wheels. It became more popular in the 1970s, with the launch of the three-wheeled All-Terrain Cycle (ATC) by the Japanese manufacturer Honda.
It was not until 1983 that the first four-wheeled quad was released by the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki, called the QuadRunner LT125. Three years later, Honda launched the first four-wheel drive quad: the FourTrax TRX350 4×4.

Over the years, real competition has been established, pitting several motorcycle manufacturers from Japan (Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda), Spain (Gas Gas), Austria (KTM), Taiwan (Kymco and Sym), the United States (Arctic Cat and Polaris) and Canada (BRP) against each other...
As a result, the quad has enjoyed considerable success in the United States before being exported to Europe. In France, the quad has rather revealed itself during the 1990s, to experience a great expansion, in particular with the appearance of approved "quadricycles". Each year, thousands of quads are sold in France.
