A Belgian Passage to China (1870-1920)

Van 1870 tot 1914 financierden, bouwden en exploiteerde België - in die tijd een van de voornaamste financiële en industriële mogendheden - honderden kilometer treinen tramlijnen over de vijf continenten.
Het westerse meerderwaardigheidsgevoel en de kolonisatiedrang van koning Leopold II waren de motor van de ondernemingen uit dit land. In China concretiseerde dit avontuur zich in de aanleg van de spoorlijn tussen Beijing en Hankou en een tramnet in Tianjin.

"A Belgian passage to China (1870-1920)" brengt twee projecten voor het voetlicht. François Nuyens vertrok in 1905 vanuit Gent naar Tianjin waar hij een elektriciteitscentrale bouwde en een tramnet aanlegde. In een goed gedocumenteerd dagboek schrijft Nuyens zijn indrukken neer over zijn verblijf in China tussen 1905 en 1908.

De broers Philippe en Adolphe Spruyt, beiden arts, reisden naar China om de medische dienst te te verzorgen op de werven van de spoorlijn tussen Beijing en Hankou. Ze kwamen terug met koffers vol Chinese antiquiteiten. Hun interessante correspondentie en meer dan 1200 fotografische glasplaten bieden een unieke blik op het dagelijkse leven van China in het begin van de twintigste eeuw.

Chinese Steam - The Last Years

China was het laatste bastion van de stoomtrein, waar tot eind 1999 nog nieuwe stoomlocomotieven voor industrieel gebruik werden gebouwd. Zelfs nu rijden er nog enkele locomotieven in kolenmijnen en andere industriële complexen, maar daar komt waarschijnlijk snel een einde aan, aangezien ketelrevisies vrijwel onmogelijk tegen een betaalbare prijs te verkrijgen zijn.
Toen het stoomtijdperk in China ten einde liep, bezochten stoomliefhebbers de resterende operationele locaties in een steeds wanhopiger poging om vast te leggen wat er gebeurde voordat het te laat was.

De Chinezen, hoewel vaak verbaasd over de belangstelling van de buitenlandse liefhebbers, waren over het algemeen gastvrij en gaven toegang tot industriële complexen en spoorlijnen in het uitgestrekte land. De locaties varieerden van de woestijnen in het verre westen van Xinjiang tot het industriële hart van Mantsjoerije, met uitstapjes naar centraal China en de Autonome Regio Mongolië. Staalfabrieken en kolenmijnen waren prominent aanwezig, evenals af en toe een overgebleven smalspoorlijn.

Dit boek toont de foto's die een enthousiasteling heeft gemaakt tijdens tien bezoeken aan China tussen 1992 en 2017.

The World's Last Steam Trains: China

The last steam locomotives were withdrawn from China Rail in 2003. After that, some continued to operate heavy freight trains on local railways for a short while, but most were deployed for use on the country's industrial railways, mainly at coal mines and steel works.
This trend continued into the first decade of the 21st century, but subsequently, the number of steam engines in service declined substantially and were confined to just a handful of industrial locations. Steam rail operations in China are now facing extinction.
The modernisation of the railways with the switch from steam to diesel, the closure of unsafe and loss-making collieries and China's drive to reduce pollution and combat climate change from burning coal, have all conspired towards the demise of the industrial lines operating steam in China.

This book looks at the last of the standard-gauge steam operations in China, including Sandaoling, the last steam-worked opencast coal mine in the world; Fuxin, a coal-mining city in Liaoning Province, which until recently, operated the largest surviving fleet of SY locomotives; Baiyin, in Gansu Province, which operated some of the last steam-hauled passenger trains in the world; and Wu Jiu, a remote coal-mining outpost in Inner Mongolia.
Beautifully illustrated with over 120 colour photographs and a description of the operations, this is a striking portrait of the last of the world's operating steam trains.

Chinas letzte Dampfloks - Unterwegs im Reich der Mitte

Edward Broekhuizen not only hunted the steam locomotives of the East-German Reichsbahn, but was also one of the first steam locomotive enthusiasts to set off for China at the end of the 1980s: when others were still mourning the loss of the East German steam locomotives, the busy Dutchman was already travelling through China with a small English tour group.

This makes him one of the pioneers who experienced the use of steam locomotives at their peak; almost ten thousand locomotives were in service on the approximately 55 000 kilometer long route network. Unique, previously unpublished images provide fascinating insights.
