Axis Aircraft in Latin America

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog begonnen Duitsland en Italië hun luchtvaartindustrie te ontwikkelen en zochten ze naar nieuwe mogelijkheden om hun wereldwijde aanwezigheid uit te breiden. Tegelijkertijd was Latijns-Amerika een regio met een onderontwikkeld transportsysteem en moeilijk begaanbaar terrein, terwijl de luchtmacht er vrijwel onbestaande was.

Met de hulp van Duitse en Italiaanse immigranten vond de Latijns-Amerikaanse luchtvaartindustrie al snel een vruchtbare bodem voor de afzet van haar producten. Zo ontstonden de eerste luchtvaartmaatschappijen in de regio, in combinatie met een groeiende interesse in de lokale militaire luchtvaart.
De commerciële luchtvaart, waaronder Scadta, de op één na grootste luchtvaartmaatschappij ter wereld, werd sterk beïnvloed door de Duitse luchtvaartindustrie met een geschiedenis van meer dan 40 jaar, terwijl het leger zich concentreerde op Italiaanse vliegtuigen.
Deze oorlogsvliegtuigen speelden een belangrijke rol tijdens de Chaco-oorlog tussen Paraguay en Bolivia, evenals tijdens de oorlog van 1941 tussen Peru en Ecuador. Ironisch genoeg werden zowel Duitse als Italiaanse types tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog tegen hun eigen fabrikanten ingezet om de zeeën te patrouilleren en te zoeken naar Duitse en Italiaanse onderzeeërs.

Bekende types zoals de Junkers F13, W34, K43, Ju52/3m, Ju86, Fiat CR.20, CR.32, BR.20, G-46, G-55, Dornier Wal, Focke Wulf Fw58 Weihe, Fw200 Condor en het enige Japanse type, de Mitsubishi Betty, komen allemaal aan bod.
Interessant genoeg bestaan er nog steeds verschillende van deze exemplaren, waaronder de laatste Dornier Wal ter wereld en de Weihe.
Het boek bevat ook het verhaal van de Duitse en Italiaanse technici en piloten die na de oorlog in Argentinië en Brazilië gingen werken en daar vele projecten ontwikkelden, waarvan sommige al vóór het einde van de oorlog in hun eigen land waren gestart.
