Axis Aircraft in Latin America

Après la Première Guerre mondiale, l'Allemagne et l'Italie entreprirent de développer leur industrie aéronautique et de rechercher de nouvelles opportunités pour étendre leur présence mondiale. Parallèlement, l'Amérique latine, région aux infrastructures de transport sous-développées et au relief accidenté, ne disposait pratiquement d'aucune force aérienne.

Grâce à l'aide d'immigrants allemands et italiens, l'industrie aéronautique d'Amérique latine a rapidement trouvé un terrain fertile pour vendre ses produits, développant les premières compagnies aériennes de la région parallèlement à un intérêt croissant pour l'aviation militaire locale.
L'aviation commerciale, notamment Scadta, la deuxième compagnie aérienne mondiale, a été fortement influencée par l'industrie aéronautique allemande, forte d'un héritage de plus de 40 ans, tandis que l'armée s'est concentrée sur les avions italiens.
Ces avions de combat ont joué un rôle prépondérant lors de la guerre du Chaco entre le Paraguay et la Bolivie, ainsi que lors de la guerre de 1941 entre le Pérou et l'Équateur. Ironie du sort, des appareils allemands et italiens ont été utilisés contre leurs constructeurs respectifs pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, patrouillant les mers à la recherche de sous-marins allemands et italiens.

Des modèles célèbres tels que le Junkers F13, W34, K43, Ju52/3m, Ju86, Fiat CR.20, CR.32, BR.20, G-46, G-55, Dornier Wal, Focke Wulf Fw58 Weihe, Fw200 Condor et le seul modèle japonais, le Mitsubishi Betty, sont tous présentés.
Il est intéressant de noter que plusieurs de ces exemplaires existent encore aujourd'hui, notamment le dernier Dornier Wal au monde et le Weihe.
L'ouvrage relate également l'histoire des techniciens et pilotes allemands et italiens qui sont allés travailler en Argentine et au Brésil après la guerre et y ont développé de nombreux projets, dont certains avaient été initiés dans leurs pays respectifs avant la fin du conflit.

The standards and developments of each period are described and the instrumentation of each cockpit is identified.
