Airport Buses

All of Britain's airports are served by buses and coaches in some form or other, whether it be by regular services from nearby towns and cities, those many miles way, or by buses connecting them with the airport's own long-stay or off-site car parks.
Thus a wide variety of vehicle types can be seen, some in the livery of their owners while others are specially branded for their daily duties. In addition, many airports use airside buses to transport passengers from the terminal building to waiting aircraft and as such are not often in the sight of airport visitors.

Buses of Malta

Fino all'ultimo quarto del XX secolo, gli autobus maltesi avevano generalmente carrozzerie costruite localmente, spesso telai modificati di origine britannica o americana. Venivano utilizzate diverse livree.

Verso la metà degli anni '70, le livree tradizionali furono sostituite da un'uniforme "verde spray" con tetto bianco per gli autobus di linea, mentre i pullman inizialmente sfoggiavano una livrea beige e bianca.

All'inizio degli anni '80, si assistette all'importazione di veicoli completi dal Regno Unito. Gli AEC Swift provenivano dalla London Transport, mentre iniziarono a comparire diversi pullman Bedford e Ford con carrozzerie Plaxton e Duple. Altri modelli includevano Bristol LH, AEC Reliance, Leyland Leopard, Tiger Cub e Panther Cub.

Come da tradizione maltese, i veicoli venivano spesso modificati con assi, motori e cambi diversi, le carrozzerie ricostruite e, in alcuni casi, completamente sostituite. Nel 1995, la livrea cambiò in giallo/bianco con una fascia arancione e rimase tale fino al 2011.

Leyland Buses in Israel

This book, the first ever written on the subject of Leyland buses in Israel, tells the story of the company's decades-long partnership with the state of Israel. First introduced on a large scale in Israel in the fifties, the Leylands were phased out in the late eighties before being retired completely, having been replaced with modern German bus models that were built by Daimler Benz and MAN.
Some were sold abroad, to developing countries, where they are said to be still running today, but the majority were quietly scrapped and broken up.

Fortunately a few escaped the cutter's torch and are kept in mint condition in Egged's Heritage Center in Holon, a symbol of solid British engineering. For countless Israelis who are old enough to remember the sight and the sound of a Leyland bus in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, they provide a chance to go back in time for one more ride on the elderly Tiger.
