Heinkel He 177 Units of World War 2 (Osprey)

In many ways, the Heinkel He 177 'Greif' (Griffon) was Nazi Germany's 'lost' strategic bomber. With some fundamental creases ironed out, and built in large numbers, the He 177 would have offered the Luftwaffe the means with which to carry out long-range, mass bombing attacks against targets of a strategic nature.

Although competing interests and personalities served to prevent this from happening, from mid-1943 the aircraft nevertheless saw service over England, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and in Russia.
The He 177 flew to the end of the war, with some machines undertaking extremely hazardous low-level missions against Soviet armour in Poland in late 1944-45.

This fascinating book, filled with detailed artwork and contemporary photographs, tells the story of this aircraft, including the political infighting at the top of the Luftwaffe's hierarchy that stymied its development, its radical technical design and its state-of-the-art weaponry.

"Erste am Feind" - Bordflugzeug und Küstenaufklärer Heinkel He 60

In the 1920s, aircraft slingshots were developed in Germany to launch mail planes from the ship. Onboard aircraft were then used as reconnaissance aircraft on warships. They expanded the area to be reconnaissance far beyond the field of vision that had previously been reserved for the best eyes in the crow's nest.
Like the scouts on land, the observers in the aircraft were often "first to see the enemy". The German Navy and the Navy used the Heinkel He 60 biplane for this task from 1935 to 1940.

This monograph begins with the secret preliminary work in 1928/29 that led to the design of the Heinkel HD 60. The series covers the tests at the E-Stelle (Sea) in Travemünde, the introduction and use of the first ten Heinkel He 60 Cs, and the subsequent series production of the D and E series at Heinkel, Arado and Weserflug.
In keeping with their use primarily as on-board aircraft, the focus of the photographs is on the years 1933 to 1940.

The reader is given unique insights into the training and use of the He 60 by naval aviation during peacetime, in the Spanish Civil War and finally in World War II.
Extra chapters deal with exports to Spain and Bulgaria, the test models for in-line engines and the known losses. Numerous sketches and drawings provide valuable information for serious model makers.

Aufklärer, Bomber, Seenotretter - See-Mehrzweckflugzeuge Heinkel He 59 und He 115

After the type monographs of the Heinkel He 60, Heinkel He 114 and Arado Ar 196 ship-borne and coastal reconnaissance aircraft published by Helios-Verlag have also established themselves as standard works internationally, this book describes the Heinkel He 59 and its successor, the He 115.
Both marked the technological beginning and end of the development and series production of twin-engine sea multi-purpose aircraft for the Luftwaffe in the German Reich.

In order to achieve competitive advantages, the EHF Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke took over components from existing designs and scaled them up to suit the needs. The single-engine Heinkel He 60 aircraft was created by reducing the size of the twin-engine Heinkel He 59.
In contrast, the twin-engine Heinkel He 115 benefited from borrowings from the single-engine Heinkel He 70, He 100 and He 114 models. The latter was one of the most elegant two-float seaplanes of its time and flew not only with the Luftwaffe, but also in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Even the British Royal Air Force (RAF) used the model successfully for a short time.
In Norway, the restoration of a He 115 B-1 recovered in 2012 is progressing and is generating growing interest in the twin-engine sea multi-purpose aircraft from Rostock.

Das große Bordflugzeug - Arado Ar 95 und Heinkel He 114

In the Weimar Republic, pioneering ship designs were developed for the Reichsmarine, which had catapults for the use of on-board reconnaissance aircraft. After the Heinkel He 60 biplane, the Arado Ar 95 and the Heinkel He 114, which were based on the tender for a large on-board aircraft, were used for a short time.
Because both of these were disappointing, the Reich Air Ministry put out a tender for the "on-board aircraft 1936" and finally procured the Arado Ar 196.

The monographs on the He 60 and the Ar 196 published by Helios-Verlag are internationally regarded as standard works. The present monograph on the Ar 95 and He 114 models concludes the development history of the shipboard aircraft in the Kriegsmarine with largely unpublished images and rare technical drawings.
