Benelli built its reputation on its iconic single-cylinder engine with a gear-driven camshaft, which dominated the popular 175 class in the 1930s. Later expanded to 250 cc and upgraded to a twin-cam design, this engine reached its peak after World War II, helping Dario Ambrosini win the world championship in 1950. By the 1960s, Grand Prix engines required more complex designs. Benelli responded by developing a remarkable four-cylinder engine. Continuously improved, this engine powered Australian rider Kelvin Carruthers to the 250 class world title in 1969. Later versions, increased to 350 and 500 cc, successfully competed against the powerful MV Agustas in the top racing categories.
This book brings together the histories of Benelli and MotoBi, two legendary manufacturers, highlighting their sporting achievements and their impact on motorcycle racing history.
