Willys-Overland MB and Ford Model GPW Jeep - Technical Manual (TM 9-803)

The Jeep, classified as a light truck, was the U.S. Army's primary four-wheel-drive vehicle during World War II. Its design was heavily influenced by Karl Probst, a freelance designer for the American Bantam Car Co.
Probst developed the "Blitz Buggy" prototype in just 49 days. While it impressed the Army, its engine did not meet requirements, and Bantam lacked the capacity for mass production. The Army adopted the design and tasked Willys and Ford with improving it.

The Willys MB featured a L134 "Go Devil" engine, while Ford's version, built to Willys' specifications, was designated GPW. Around 640.000 Jeeps were produced by Ford and Willys, serving in various roles, including scout vehicles, ambulances, and artillery tractors. Jeeps remained in military use through the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Originally issued in 1944, technical manual TM 9-803 provides detailed information on the Jeep's design and maintenance. It covers the engine, cooling, powertrain, and other systems. Initially classified as restricted, it has long since been declassified and is now reprinted in book form, preserving the original text.
