From 1974 to 1981, Volkswagen developed a real range around the Scirocco, a worthy replacement for the Karmann Ghia. For all tastes and all colors, such could be the slogan of this model. From the economical 50 hp engine to the fiery 110 hp GTI/GLI, VW was able to offer its customers a multitude of combinations.

Designed by Giugiaro, this versatile and almost family-friendly coupe with its tailgate and folding rear seats was just as much intended for the sports driver as for the father. Distributed in more than 500 000 copies in 8 years of career, the Scirocco was able to conquer Europe but also the country of Uncle Sam, since more than a third of its production crossed the Atlantic.
During its sporting life, it was the host of the Junior Cup, the German equivalent of the Renault cups.

With the Corrado, introduced in 1989, VW managed to move up into the Porsche and BMW league. Competent engineers had developed innovative technologies that gave the Wolfsburg sports car muscle.
After the G-charger model, the new VR 6 with its unusual six-cylinder engine took over the role of the sportiest Volkswagen of all time in autumn 1991, while the series was rounded off at the bottom by a two-litre 16V version.

The idea of bringing a sports car onto the market came from Golf designer Giorgio Giugiaro. And to underline its sporty, fast character, the car was given the name of an African desert wind: Scirocco.
In the late 1980s, the Corrado was supposed to replace the Scirocco, but was instead offered alongside it.
