After the MGB ended production and the Abingdon factory closed in 1980, it seemed the era of classic MG sports cars was over. While the RV8 appeared in the 1990s as an upgraded MGB, designers were also creating a new model, unveiled in 1995.

Developed under British Aerospace and launched by BMW's Rover Group, the MGF later came under MG Rover ownership after BMW split the company in 2000. The TF was introduced and produced until MG Rover went into administration in 2005.
