Automobiles Österreich: 100 Jahre Automobilgeschichte in Bildern

This book aims to trace the functions and significance of the automobile in Austrian history from 1900 to 2000. From the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 to Hitler's invasion of Vienna in March 1938 and from the Kennedy-Khrushchev summit in 1961 to the sealing of the blue-black coalition in Jörg Haider's Porsche in 2000, the automobile plays a decisive role in political decisions and staging.

And at the same time, the production based around the automobile (from Steyr-Daimler-Puch to the idea of an Austro-Porsche, from the refinery to the petrol station and from the supplier industry to road construction) is an important economic factor in Austria.
But the community, from the postal bus to the ambulance, is also no longer imaginable without the automobile.

From artists to proud drivers, men and women alike like to pose with (their) cars, which are also an indispensable part of the family photo album. Finally, the racing driver (especially Jochen Rindt) became a role model and hero for entire generations.
But from a cultural and historical perspective, the car is much more than that: it shapes ideas of masculinity and speed, of pleasure ("joy of driving") and individuality, of closeness and distance, of (individual and collective) prosperity and power.

The book aims to take a historical look at 20th century Austria from the perspective of the car and, not least, to ask whether these 100 years would not have been very different without the car.

Motorsport in Österreich - 1945 bis 1970
