L'originalité a toujours été une des caractéristiques de l'automobile, mais pas la règle. Le besoin d'innover pour des raisons techniques ou stylistiques a souvent eu pour résultat des voitures différentes, attachantes. Elles avaient parfois les défauts de leurs qualités : manque de fiabilité à cause de leur sophistication, prix exorbitant... En 1898, une société européenne importa aux Indes britanniques trois "voitures sans cheval" qui trouvèrent acquéreur dans quelques états princiers du pays.
Cet événement marqua le début de la grande histoire d'amour des Maharadjas pour l'automobile. L'arrivée de ces voitures modifia totalement le mode de vie de la royauté indienne en déclenchant une passion dévorante qui dura des décennies.
