After the Second World War, Germany experienced a brief renaissance in the field of steam locomotive construction. Until the early 1960s, both the German Bundesbahn and the German Reichsbahn of the GDR invested in the new development or expensive upgrading of steam locomotives to the most modern standards. Even some West German private railways acquired steam locomotives at this time.

At the end of the steam locomotive era in the Federal Republic of Germany, there was an economic boom that delayed the end of steam engines in scheduled service by several years. From 1970 onwards, the Federal Republic experienced a rapid upswing, during which full employment was even achieved at times.
This economic boom resulted in increased transport services, so that the DB's ambitious goal of doing without steam locomotives from 1973 onwards was no longer feasible. On the contrary: Steam traction experienced a renaissance that reached its peak with the oil price crisis in 1973/74 and the associated recommissioning of coal-fired steam locomotives.

Wittes Neubaulokomotiven - Die letzten Dampfloks der Deutschen Bundesbahn und ihre Schöpfer 1949 bis 1977

When the German Bundesbahn was founded in 1949, the end of steam traction was already foreseeable. Nevertheless, the DB acquired five steam locomotive series by 1959. These machines were the work of Friedrich Witte (1900-1977) from the Bundesbahn Central Office in Minden, who had held the office of "design officer" for steam locomotives at the old Reichsbahn since 1942.
He kept this job at the Bundesbahn until 1965 and is therefore considered the "father of new locomotives".

This richly illustrated review of the life and work of the railwayman who developed the "Witte smoke deflectors" and made the "Super Pacifics" of the 01.10 series operational for the German Bundesbahn, is a fitting tribute to Friedrich Witte's life's work.
