Scania Buses and Coaches
From a collaboration with MCW to produce buses in the 1970s through to the powerful luxury coaches of today, Scania vehicles are a familiar sight on the roads of Britain. Known for their levels of reliability, power and style, they are a popular choice for local bus services, as well as high-end coach operations.
Covering the period from the start of Scania's entry into the UK market up to the present day, this book gives an overview of all the models to enter the UK market. With a brief description of each chassis type and 180 photographs, most in colour and all with informative captions, it showcases Scania's products in their operating heyday.
Scania's first venture into the British double-decker bus market came in 1973, when with partner MCW, based in Birmingham, they produced the 'Metropolitan' double-decker. In 1980, after a brief hiatus, Scania re-entered the British double-decker market with a chassis for bodying by all the major UK builders.
Featuring a wonderful array of previously unpublished images, this book is a fond tribute to forty years of Scania double-decker buses on Britain's roads.
Over the years, Scania has supplied different models for operation in London, beginning in 1989. A notable batch of Scania N113CRBs, bodied by Alexander and Northern Counties, was procured by London Buses Limited in the early 1990s, later transferring to private operators in 1994. Scania re-entered the London market in 2002 with Metrobus acquiring a fleet of single-deckers. The Scania N94UD and Scania OmniCity double-deck models gained popularity with several operators from 2006 to 2012.
Despite not being as numerous as its competitors, London's Scanias provided reliable service for many years. However, with the introduction of new rolling stock and standardization, the type phased out of London service. This book offers a condensed history of the different Scania models during their tenure in the capital.
