Bluebird CN7 - The inside story of Donald Campbell's last Land Speed Record car

Since the early 1920s the name Bluebird has been synonymous with world speed record breaking on land and water. Driven first by Sir Malcolm Campbell, then his son Donald, and latterly by Donald's nephew Donald Wales in electric powered vehicles, they have consistently pushed records ever higher.

This book is the story of the design and construction of the fastest of the Bluebirds, the Campbell-Norris 7 (CN7). This car, now resident in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in England, is the most sophisticated design ever produced for a wheel-driven record breaker.
Using methods and materials developed for the aircraft industry, the CN7, given suitable running conditions, was capable in 1960 of a speed exceeding that produced by the present wheel-driven record holder 19 years later.

The author was first employed by the designers Norris Brothers Ltd as a design draughtsman on the Bluebird K7 hydroplane. After completing his National Service in the RAF, he rejoined the company to work with the two chief designers developing the specification for CN7, and he later became project co-ordinator for its construction.

Parry Thomas - The First Driver to be Killed in Pursuit of the Land Speed Record

John Godfrey Parry Thomas - J.G. Thomas - était à tous égards un homme hors du commun. Issu d'une famille traditionnelle, fils du vicaire de Rhosddu au Pays de Galles, et né en avril 1884, il devint une figure marquante du monde naissant des courses automobiles et de la conception de voitures de grande vitesse.

Thomas devint par la suite ingénieur en chef chez Leyland Motors, une entreprise spécialisée dans les véhicules utilitaires. Mais J.G. Thomas s'intéressait davantage aux voitures plus performantes et, en 1920, avec son assistant Reid Railton, il conçut la Leyland Eight, une voiture de luxe dotée de nombreuses innovations, telles que des ressorts de torsion, des barres antiroulis et des freins à assistance pneumatique.

C'est l'expérience de piloter cette voiture sur le circuit de Brooklands qui convainquit Thomas de quitter son poste chez Leyland pour devenir pilote et ingénieur automobile à plein temps. Avec la Leyland Eight, Thomas connut un certain succès, remportant 38 courses en cinq saisons et établissant de nombreux records.

Thomas continua de développer des voitures toujours plus rapides et finit par s'intéresser au record de vitesse terrestre. Il acquit la Higham "Special", équipée d'un moteur Liberty de 27 litres, et, après l'avoir modifiée et rebaptisée Babs, il atteignit une vitesse de plus de 270 km/h (170 mph) à Pendine Sands, au Pays de Galles, le 28 avril 1926. Ce faisant, il battit le record de Colin Campbell de près de 32 km/h (20 mph).

L'année suivante, Campbell reprit le record, ce qui incita Thomas à tenter de le reconquérir, une fois de plus à Pendine Sands. Malheureusement, le 3 mars 1927, Babs s'écrasa et Thomas trouva la mort. Il fut enterré à Byfleet, dans le Surrey, tandis que Babs reposa dans les dunes de Pendine Sands.

Reid Railton : Man of Speed

Reid Antony Railton, ingénieur automobile de talent originaire du Cheshire, a conçu une gamme remarquable de voitures. The Land Speed Record - 1898-1919 - Brooklands Portfolio

A portfolio of reports telling how the first Land Speed Record of 39.24 mph was set in 1898 by Count de Chasseloup-Laubet in an electric Jeantaud.
