Diesel Locomotives Around the World

Following the end of the steam locomotive in normal service, the diesel has become the favourite of many railway enthusiasts. To show something of the diesel types and operations on various international railway systems, Peter J. Green has selected some of his best railway photographs from his travels to six of the seven continents of the world.

The photographs were taken in forty-five countries between 1975 and 2019. While the use of diesel locomotives in many parts of the world is declining with the increasing use of railcars and spreading electrification, a good variety of power can still be found.
Particularly rewarding destinations include the USA and Canada, with their impressive freight trains, and many parts of Asia, where diesel-hauled passenger trains regularly run through interesting landscapes. Diesel traction has also become an important feature of many tourist railways worldwide. Whether photographing the railways or travelling by train, the visitor cannot fail to be impressed.

Die Diesellokomotive - Aufbau, Technik, Auslegung

The diesel locomotive combines a wide range of physical problems and challenges and requires interesting technological solutions. Most locomotives worldwide are now powered by diesel engines.

But a diesel locomotive is a complicated vehicle and even the engine, which was introduced over 100 years ago, still has room for development. In the last three decades in particular, the electronics in almost all components have been overhauled. Manufacturers such as Vossloh and Voith have been particularly influential in this area.

This book is intended to provide an overview of the key components of a diesel locomotive and their function in an understandable way.

Rundnasen und Kartoffelkäfer - Die NoHAB-Europalokomotiven

Las locomotoras diésel apodadas "Rundnase", "Dicknase" o "Kartoffelkäfer" han alcanzado un estatus de culto. A partir de 1954, se fabricaron 159 locomotoras de este tipo bajo licencia de EMD en NoHAB, en Trollhättan (Suecia), para Noruega, Dinamarca y Hungría. Además, AFB produjo 40 locomotoras para Bélgica y cuatro para Luxemburgo. Su diseño se basa en la serie F y la clase B estadounidenses, pero adaptado a las necesidades europeas.

Los últimos servicios regulares terminaron en 2000/2001 en Hungría, Noruega y Dinamarca. En Bélgica fueron retiradas unos años antes, en Luxemburgo en 1994. Sin embargo, muchas de estas locomotoras robustas siguen operando en compañías ferroviarias privadas, principalmente en Dinamarca, Suecia y Alemania.

La primera parte del libro ilustrado repasa los últimos años de servicio en los ferrocarriles estatales. La segunda parte se centra en las locomotoras aún activas, con especial atención a Alemania.
