La Sambre belge - Première rivière canalisée

Este libro narra la historia del Sambre, el primer río canalizado de Bélgica. Nacido en Francia, entra en Bélgica en Erquelinnes y recorre unos noventa kilómetros antes de unirse al Mosa en Namur.
Conocido desde la Antigüedad por su corriente fuerte y sus zonas poco profundas, ofrecía una navegación difícil. A partir de 1825, la canalización y la construcción de esclusas hicieron que el río pudiera ser utilizado por barcos cada vez más pesados.
En el siglo XIX, la revolución industrial multiplicó la producción y el transporte fluvial se convirtió en la opción más económica para grandes volúmenes de mercancías. La industria pesada situada a lo largo del Sambre marcó el paisaje y convirtió el río en un motor económico para el sur del país.

El río cruza zonas rurales al inicio de su curso y regiones industriales más adelante. Este libro ilustrado, compuesto por fotografías raras e inéditas, recuerda este valioso pasado.
